Leaves the hard smelling like raw, dries hella slow, stays mushy and crumbly not rock hard and snappy. Not enough soda: water will look thick and viscous and push the oil glob out of the center towards the edges. Give your cook enough water so the soda can stay dissolved in the water and not need to climb out. The soda needs some where to go, if you dont have enough water the soda/salt will climb up spoon once the water is fully saturated, stealing some crack with it. Not enough water: foam dome will look dry and swiss cheese, water is very very cloudy, or crusties start crawling up sides of spoon. Underheating/undercooked: solids remain on bottom of water, water is cloudy or milky, any chunks remain in oil

Too hot: If it's steaming like crazy, or smells like crack or if the water begins to boil, just be aware that when the soda heats it will convert to salt and gas, creating lots of bubbles, this is good, but if the bubbles are coming from the spoon itself, that's bad.
